My name is Kawandeep Virdee

I am interested in the intersection of complexity and design thinking: to design with systems in mind, by considering the interactions between individuals with one another, the environment, and resulting local and global implications.

I believe that there are ways to design cities, organizations, and products effectively, but such designs will need to empower individuals- be it citizens, or consumers- in a way that allows them to be creative individually and collectively.  In this pursuit I explore how design can be a tool for empowerment and I pursue academic research in complex systems.

I also explore these ideas in art and performance.

Electronic music composition is a deep passion of mine. You can hear some of my music.

Thank you for exploring the projects and ideas. I’d love to hear your thoughts: feel free to contact me if you have something intriguing to share or you just want to say hello.  Idea-jamming totally welcome.

Kawan deep literally translates to “which light”. He is a mathematician and multimedia artist who is currently living in Boston, MA.  Kawandeep received a BS in Physics and Applied Mathematics from GWU, researching electromagnetic test engineering at NASA, nuclear physics at the Mainz Microtron Facility, and medical physics at the UMD Medical Center, while exploring collaboration in music and arts around DC. Afterward, in Portland he pursued further collaborations within the vibrant artist-musician community.  There he found his interest in the interactions between individuals and systems, and in the potential of the complex systems framework as a tool to design solutions for a beautiful world. He is currently researching complex systems at NECSI.
