tech@state data visualization

Tomorrow Tech@State Data Visualization begins. I’m pretty excited- its a meeting of minds converging to see how the latest in technology can help in the sectors of policy and diplomacy. In this case, specifically focused on data visualization.

I’m most excited for the first couple sessions. Edward Tufte is kicking off the conference with a keynote on ‘Policy and Technology’, and then there will be a panel called ‘Development Challenge: Open Data to Making Sense of Data.  Those two sessions bring together two passions of mine: design and open data- with a focus to try and make the world a better place.

Most recently, I’ve been learning about open data and visualization for the Open Finance Initiative and have been learning about the intersection of data, visualization and policy with my  research at the New England Complex Systems Institute.  I can only imagine all the great conversations and insights that will come from the sessions this weekend.

On Saturday there will be an unconference. A great way to engage participants and get some more perspectives.  I loved BarCamp Boston, and I’m curious how the dynamics of this unconference will play out.  I’m working on getting some material together for it.
