Name tags of different people. As each person arrives, they write their actual name on a name tag, and are given the name tag of the person who arrived before them. Different strategies can be used to handle boundary conditions (e.g. person who arrived first is given the last name at the previous party, or a dictionary word picked at random). Also, different strategies can be thought of to handle groups of people arriving together, to minimize the likelihood that you will end up with the name tag of someone you already know.

I like this. I may try it at a soup night… or a WHIRL. It reminds me of a big art and tech event in Portland a few years back. We were given a label, a number or a name or something, and we had to find our twin in the crowd who had the same label. Great way to mix things up and get conversations going. And it turned out I was paired with @brampitoyo! Thats where I was introduced to both he and @caseorganic, so I totally dug this ice breaker.
